The Beginning - 30 Days "Down Under"

Back to the Beginning – 30 Days “Down Under”

It’s been a life-long dream to return to the place I was born and then left as an infant.  A place that welcomed my father (pictured center in Greensborough with friends and the family dog, Chappy) and his family when he was just a boy in the late 1940's.  A place where my “gypsy” mother eventually ran away to, from her home in Berlin, escaping political oppression and her family.

This place is wild and vast – nearly the size of United States and legendary for its unique landscapes, animal life and mostly, its people. This place is Australia.

Australia conjures up a frontier reputation, one romanticized in films, books and minds of the adventurous (but maybe most of all, in my mind).  Now, as I approach 50 years of age, I am making the journey back for the first time.

The thought to return to Australia has tugged at my wish strings for a very long time. Why have I waited this long? The journey is very long and costly from where I’ve lived since leaving Australia. Finding the time (or rather making the time) has been the biggest challenge. With just under 30 days, I'll be exploring what makes Australia so appealing and along the way reconnect with the land that’s been calling me back.    The journey begins ...
